Huami Unveils Amazfit GTS Smartwatch with Apple Watch-like Design

Huami has announced the Amazfit GTS smartwatch, with a design clearly inspired by the Apple Watch.

At an event in China, the wearable giant detailed the new smartwatch, which features a rectangular watch face and single dial to one side of its crown, similar to Apple’s dominant device.

Its 1.65-inch display is AMOLED, with a pixel resolution of 348 x 442 and 341 pixels per inch (PPI), slightly higher than the Apple Watch Series 4. The GTS’s body is made of aluminum alloy, and is 9.4mm thick, weighing 24.8g. This also makes it a shade thinner than the Series 4, and a good chunk lighter, too.

The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and housed in a steel frame, and will be customizable. The watch will ship with 40 faces to choose from, with up to 100 to come after release.

The Amazfit GTS smartwatch is waterproof to 5ATM, meaning it can withstand being submerged down to 50 meters or 10 minutes, and should be fine for swimming. It also packs in NFC for contactless payments and an optical heart rate sensor to offer 24-hour monitoring.

With a 220mAh battery, the smartwatch can last for 14 days by standard, according to Huami, although continuous use of its GPS tracking will bring this down to 25 hours. A basic functionality mode will turn the Bluetooth connectivity and the heart rate monitor off, but raise the battery life to 46 days.

The GTS is available to pre-order in any of six colors in China now, priced at CNY 899 (around $125), ahead of release in late September.

At the same event, Huami also detailed its new Amazfit Sports Watch 3, pictured above. It houses most of the same features as the GTS, but with a round face and more outdoors-focused design along with a week-long battery life.

It boasts offline music playback, a 1.34-inch JDI Full-Moon reflective low-power color display and VO2 max measurement to go with its optical heart rate monitor.

The Sports Watch 3 is open for pre-orders starting at CNY 1,300 ($180).

Finally, Huami also unveiled a concept watch that it’s still prototyping. The Amazfit X will have a 2.07-inch curved AMOLED display, with a design much like the Samsung Galaxy Fit – if that device’s screen were twice as big. It’s an interesting-looking device that we’ll keep an eye out for any more details on.
